Chapter 5 Going up the mountain
As it grew darker, the four of them said goodbye to Yu Laoer and Xiao Wang, and returned to the small courtyard at the foot of Taoyuan Mountain, carrying baskets of wild vegetables.
Pan Yingying found a scale from the house and weighed the wild vegetables of Yu Chuner and Yu Qiuer respectively.
"Chun'er weighs seven catties, Qiu'er weighs five catties, and each catty weighs two cents, so Chun'er gets fourteen cents, and Qiu'er gets ten cents."
Pan Yingying counted out twenty-four coins from a goose yellow, half-worn purse and gave them to each of them.
Yu Chun'er didn't refuse anymore. She had already planned to hand it over to her uncle when the time came, so she simply took it and called Yu Qiu'er into the kitchen to cook.
Taking advantage of this time, Pan Yingying and Yu Chaosheng sold their wild vegetables, earning a total of nearly 600 wen. She deducted her two-thirds of the shipping fee, plus Yu Chun'er and Yu Qiu'er's share, and gave Yu Chaosheng 130 wen.
Now it only costs 15 cents a day to carry bags at the town's dock, and Yu Chaosheng is very satisfied.
For dinner, we had noodle dumplings cooked in bone soup and served with mixed wild vegetables. All four of us were very satisfied with the meal.
In the evening, Pan Yingying had just laid down on the bed and Yu Chaosheng was still washing up in the yard when there was a knock on the door. The person who came was Yu Laoer.
Instead of coming in, he called Yu Chaosheng out.
Yu Chaosheng's yard was at the foot of Taoyuan Mountain, far away from other houses in the village, so the two of them could stand outside and talk without worrying about being overheard.
Taking out a string of copper coins from his pocket, Yu Lao Er looked unhappy, "They are just some wild vegetables, not worth paying copper coins, and you gave so much."
Yu Chaosheng said "Oh!" with a nonchalant look, and in Yu Laoer's eyes, his younger brother was careless.
"This is Xiaochun and Xiaoqiu's wages. Why did you come back, second brother?"
Yu Lao Er glared at him and was about to stuff the money into his arms, "What nonsense are you talking about! Are you going to make a living?"
Yu Chaosheng quickly took two steps back to prevent him from getting close to him. "I'm not talking nonsense. My wife is very good at making money. With her support, I can eat delicious food every day. I don't need this little money. Just let Xiaochun and Xiaoqiu collect it. They work so hard to cook."
Hearing this, Yu Lao Er became even angrier and pointed his finger at him, "Are you still a man? You think you're a gigolo and you think you're right!"
Yu Chaosheng was not ashamed but proud of it. He went from being a rich second-generation to a pauper, and it was all because of that woman Pan Yingying. If she hadn't quarreled with him at the hotel entrance and insisted on going back to apologize to the shameless Lao Deng, would they have been hit by a car?
It was all her fault and she had to take responsibility for him.
"Well, being able to live off others is my ability. Second brother, don't worry about me. Worry more about our own fields. I heard from my mother-in-law that the price of grain has gone up again recently." Yu Chaosheng smiled playfully. Everyone knew that he was a reckless person.
When he heard that grain prices had risen again, Yu Laoer was even more unwilling to accept the copper coins and was determined to return the money to him.
Yu Chaosheng turned around and ran to the yard, leaving him with only one sentence, "My father-in-law and mother-in-law have said that they will support me even if they have to tighten their belts, so don't worry!"
Yu Laoer was so angry that he fell backwards, but the door was closed, so he had no choice but to go home with the money in his pocket.
Xiao Wang was still angry. She didn't agree to return the money at all. That was what her two daughters had worked hard for an entire afternoon to earn. Yu Laoer just opened his mouth and took the money away and gave it to the third room. How could she understand that?
When she saw him come back, she rolled her eyes and turned to go to her two daughters' room to sleep.
Yu Lao Er had no choice but to stop the man, took out a copper coin from his pocket and handed it over, "Here, don't be angry."
Little Wang didn't answer and turned aside, "Why are you asking me to do this? Give it to your good brother!"
Yu Lao Er walked up to her and explained, "Don't complain about me loving Chao Sheng all the time. Although he is a little unreasonable on weekdays, he is loyal and righteous. When he heard that the grain price had risen again at the Pan family, he and the third son's wife found ways to help us. Didn't he even send us pork dumplings at noon?"
A few days ago, Wang's father broke his leg in the mountains. Wang's mother became ill due to anger and anxiety. Yu Laoer took the initiative to send the only ten taels of silver in the family to him.
There are still dozens of kilograms of grain left at home, and I can't even afford ten copper coins. Soon, there will be no rice to cook. It would be a lie to say that I am not anxious. Little Wang pursed her lips and took the copper coins, "It's not a good thing for Chun'er and Qiu'er to eat in the third room every day. Tomorrow morning, you can move a bag of corn from home over. Let's find time to tidy up the two plots of land in the third room. Doesn't the third wife like to eat radishes? Let's plant radishes for her."
Yu Lao Er knew that Xiao Wang had figured it out, so he smiled and held her hand, "I knew you, Daya, were the most reasonable."
Xiao Wang: ...
Why did you suddenly call yourself by a nickname?
"go to bed!"
The next morning, Yu Laoer knocked on the gate of Yu Chaosheng's house carrying a bag of corns. He was accompanied by Yu Chun'er and Yu Qiu'er, who were carrying baskets filled with pickled vegetables and cabbage.
Yu Chaosheng took out a dried chicken from the kitchen that he and Pan Yingying had bought from the mall last night to cover up his tracks, stuffed it into Yu Laoer's hands, and pushed him out the door.
I walked back to my room in cloth slippers, complaining to myself that the ancient people got up too early; it's not even dawn yet.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Yu Chun'er leading Yu Qiu'er to the kitchen. I yawned and reminded them, "There are ready-made meat buns in the cupboard, as well as pickled mustard tubers and quite a few eggs."
Yu Chun'er was not surprised by her uncle's behavior of sleeping in. She nodded maturely and walked into the kitchen.
Yu Qiuer, who was following behind her, swallowed her saliva, knowing that those things must have been given by her aunt's family. She made up her mind to have a good relationship with her aunt, and her uncle, who lived close to her aunt, had to come behind her.
Smelling the fragrance coming from the dining room, Pan Yingying quickly got up and washed, thinking of buying an alarm clock in the mall, as she always couldn't figure out the time here.
Yu Chaosheng was yawning continuously. He had gone shopping in the mall too late last night "through" Pan Yingying, and was still very sleepy. However, thinking about going up the mountain, he washed his face with cold water to wake himself up.
After dinner, as they were not sure about the situation on the mountain, Pan Yingying said that she and Yu Chaosheng would go back to her parents' home. She asked the two girls to dig wild vegetables by themselves, and then bring them home in the evening to weigh them, and each of them was given five meat buns.
Watching the two little girls leave, Pan Yingying picked up the hatchet and raised her chin towards Yu Chaosheng, "Let's go."
Yu Chaosheng picked up his hoe and followed. The two of them started from the back door and followed the path next to it to climb up Taoyuan Mountain.
Not long after I walked, a reminder sounded in my mind.
[Ding! Wild comfrey found! Worth one tael of silver per pound! ]
Pan Yingying quickly stepped forward and pulled up the green herbs indicated on the virtual panel. Seeing this, Yu Chaosheng also stepped forward and pulled up the remaining few.
"How is it? How much is one pound?" Yu Chaosheng handed over the comfrey and asked repeatedly.
After storing the comfrey in the space, Pan Yingying answered, "Five hundred coins."
Yu Chaosheng clenched his fist excitedly, "YES!"
Pan Yingying smiled slightly and cursed "idiot" in her heart.
"Keep going. If we find ginseng or something, we'll be rich." She urged softly.
Yu Chaosheng nodded repeatedly, "Let's go, let's get rich!"
The two of them went all the way up.
